History

The Adalbert Stifter Association was founded in Munich in 1947 by academics and scientists, artists and writers from Prague and the Sudetenland. In Bad Aibling (1948) and Bayreuth (1949) it organized the first Sudeten German Pentecost Days of Culture. Initially it was mostly active in supporting the culture of the displaced Germans, then the office developed into a cultural institute that since 1952 is institutionally supported by the German government.

After the suppression of the Prague Spring in the summer of 1968, the association, in cooperation with InterNationes, formed a “Czechoslovak office” to help Czech and Slovak emigrants. Since the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989, it has become one of the mediators of German-Czech cultural exchange. Between 1994-2016, together with German and Czech institutions, it sponsored an art prize for German-Czech understanding. Since 2020 the association, alongside the Institute for Literary Research, awards the Otokar Fischer Prize.

Exhibitions

The Adalbert Stifter Association designs and curates exhibitions about the history of German-Bohemian culture. Among the most successful have been exhibitions devoted to Emperor Charles IV, Emil Orlik, Adalbert Stifter, Franz Werfel, Jan Amos Comenius, an exhibition about artists working for Austro-Hungarian war propaganda, and exhibitions about Prague as a centre of emigration in the 1930s and as a bilingual literary city.

Publications

The Adalbert Stifter Association has also published a series of art books on Bohemian art and cultural history. Most recently, together with scholars of German from the Universities of Olomouc, Prague and Weimar, it has put together a "Handbook on German Literature in Prague and the Czech Lands" (JB Metzler 2017) and, in the anthology "Between Mourning and Triumph: The Year 1918 in Central European Literature" (Friedrich Pustet 2018), it recalls how the end of the First World War was depicted in Central- and South-East European literature.
